Police Brutality

On August 7th, 2022, while monitoring the scene of the most recent shooting by KCPD, members of the Kansas City Law Enforcement Accountability Project (KCLEAP) witnessed and filmed an act of excessive use of force by the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department on an innocent witness who was present when KCPD killed Zachary Garrard at 55th and Prospect.

This victim was picked up and body slammed on his head while in handcuffs by a KCPD officer yet to be identified. The victim was severely concussed and lay unresponsive for several minutes. This act of violence was completely unprovoked.

The victim was taken from the scene by ambulance and suffers long-term effects from his head injury.

KCLEAP is in contact with the victim. We have assisted him in retaining counsel and referred him to the Excessive Use of Force Unit of the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the incident.

We continue to support this victim in various capacities, as this violent act has caused him numerous levels of trauma. We are not naming the victim but have been permitted to release our video and photos of his injuries.

It is fortunate that we were on the scene when this horrific incident occurred- but know that this type of police violence happens regularly by KCPD without consequence.
