Crime scene

Rapid Response and Investigation

We will train you. The Rapid Response/Investigating Team (RRT) responds to the scene of all KCPD-involved shootings. Members of the team document the scene and record the actions of all law enforcement and other first responders from several vantage points from behind the secured perimeter. This team also interviews witnesses and interacts with bystanders/community members. We remain on the scene until cleared (Tape is down, and the investigating agency and officers have left the scene). We then document the crime scene ourselves with photos, video, and other means. We interview any remaining witnesses and conduct an area canvass if it is reasonable to do so at the time. If not, the Canvass Team canvasses the following day(s).

Victim Advocate

Victim advocates need to have the ability to listen with a strong sense of empathy and compassion for the individuals they work with. Other helpful skills include counseling and advocacy skills, problem solving, and being willing to participate in team problem-solving. Victims of police violence have very few, if any, resources in Kansas City. Our goal is to develop a complete support network specifically for victims of police violence. Thus far, our Victim Advocates (VA) work has ranged from securing funding for cremation and urn, fundraising for relocation, providing meals, and clothing, supporting families through legal proceedings, referrals to competent legal counsel, accompanying clients to meetings and so much more. This support is ongoing; there are no time constraints. Our clients often become like family.

Hotline Response

The Hotline Response Team will continuously monitor the KCLEAP hotline (816-477-LEAP). The team will listen to all voice mails / read all text messages, and will respond within 72 hours. It’s important to take all important information down and relay all pertinent facts back to the group. All accounts of excessive use of force will be monitored on the hotline.

Communications and Social Media

The Communications / Social Media Team will be responsible for creating and publishing content on all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to grow an audience, and build brand awareness. We need someone who has familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing. Experience with search engine marketing, Google Analytics, and Google AdWords is also a plus.

Fundraising and Grant Writing

We need help getting the word out about the important work we do and generate donations and funding streams so that we can have a larger community impact with victims and increase public awareness. Someone with ties to the philanthropic community would be ideal. Knowledge of the not for profit sector would be very helpful.
