Victim advocates need to have the ability to listen with a strong sense of empathy and compassion for the individuals they work with. Other helpful skills include counseling and advocacy skills, problem solving, and being willing to participate in team problem-solving. Victims of police violence have very few, if any, resources in Kansas City. Our goal is to develop a complete support network specifically for victims of police violence. Thus far, our Victim Advocates (VA) work has ranged from securing funding for cremation and urn, fundraising for relocation, providing meals, and clothing, supporting families through legal proceedings, referrals to competent legal counsel, accompanying clients to meetings and so much more. This support is ongoing; there are no time constraints. Our clients often become like family.
